LEEDS, U.K. - eTradeWire -- Yorkshire Asbestos Solutions, an asbestos removal business based in Bramley, Leeds, has set out guidance for homeowners in Leeds, Bradford and West Yorkshire who want to take down an old garage, replace a garage roof or clear a garden shed.

Many older concrete garages, sheds and garden buildings have asbestos cement roof sheets. Asbestos was widely used in British buildings until 1999, and the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) says much of it is still in place. The business has drawn four points from HSE guidance.

1. Check the age of the building. HSE states that buildings constructed after 2000 are unlikely to contain asbestos. In older properties, HSE lists cement roof sheets, gutters and downpipes among the places it can be found.

2. Leave sound material alone. According to HSE, asbestos in good condition that is not disturbed carries an extremely low risk. The danger comes when the material is drilled, broken or damaged, so the business advises against breaking up an old garage roof.

3. Find out what the material is before work starts. Asbestos cement is a hard grey material, and HSE notes that a sample can be tested to confirm it. Similar looking boards such as asbestos insulating board are likely to need a licensed contractor.

4. Dispose of waste safely. HSE strongly encourages the use of trained professionals to remove asbestos materials, and says asbestos waste must be legally disposed of as hazardous waste, never mixed with normal household waste.

"A garage removal looks like a simple weekend job, but if the roof is asbestos cement it needs to come down in one piece," said a spokesperson for Yorkshire Asbestos Solutions. "Please do not pressure wash, scrub or break old roof sheets, and stay off fragile roofs. Get the material checked, then plan the demolition and removal safely."
