"Whitey Johnson: Live From Printer's Alley" slated for January 2027 release
LANCASTER, Pa. - eTradeWire -- Two-time GRAMMY® winner and member of both the Nashville and Texas Heritage Songwriter Halls of Fame, Gary Nicholson has a long musical history, a great part of which has been behind the scenes. A gifted songwriter, for over 42 years he's penned songs for a who's who of the industry's top superstars.
Donning a white suit, hat, and guitar, Gary also performs as his alter-ego, Whitey Johnson. The character of Whitey Johnson is based on a story Nicholson wrote about a guitar player who performed at a fair in his hometown of Garland, TX. When Nicholson takes the stage as Whitey, he invokes the spirit of the blues performers and music he has admired and loved all his life.
For seven years, the Whitey Johnson band played every Tuesday night at Bourbon Street Blues Bar in Printer's Alley in Nashville, TN doing all original blues. Joining Whitey (guitar and vocals) were Reese Wynans (R&R HOF member with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble) on keyboards, Colin Linden (Bob Dylan, Bruce Cockburn) on guitar, Mike Joyce (Roy Orbison) on bass, and Lynn Williams (Delbert McClinton) on drums.

The latest project, Whitey Johnson: Live From Printer's Alley, was recorded on one of those Tuesday nights. This previously unreleased performance captures the Whitey Johnson Band at its spontaneous best. With no rehearsal and no idea the sound man was recording their performance, the band simply played and had fun. What emerged is an unedited, energetic and soulful set filled with musical chemistry, unexpected moments, and the live bandstand energy - a rare snapshot of a great band doing what it did best.
Several songs featured on this release have previously been recorded by some of the biggest names in blues. Among them are "Skin Deep," famously recorded by Buddy Guy; "Lie No Better," recorded by Etta James; and "Monkey Around," recorded by Delbert McClinton.
"I'm thrilled to have the opportunity to work with someone as seasoned and talented as Gary," says label manager Debra Clark. "He brings an impressive depth of experience to every aspect of the music industry, and his performances as Whitey are as musically outstanding as they are entertaining. We're excited about this album and confident that listeners will love what they hear!"
