Misophonia Foundation Releases Free World of Warcraft Addon To Block Visual Triggers

Sensory Vignette gives players with misokinesia and other visual sensitivities control over how much on-screen motion they see, without hiding the game's interface.

COLUMBIA, Mo. - eTradeWire -- The International Misophonia Foundation (IMF) today announced Sensory Vignette, a free accessibility addon for World of Warcraft that shades the edges of the screen to cut down on peripheral visual movement. The addon was developed through the Sensory Accessible Technology Initiative (SAT-I), an IMF initiative, and is available now on CurseForge.

Sensory Vignette responds to a problem many players with visual sensitivities know well: constant motion they never asked to see. Other players jumping in place, spell effects that never stop and movement at the edges of the screen can make the game hard to play. The addon doesn't alter player models or stop animations. Instead, it hands the player control over how much of the 3D world stays visible, while the game's own interface stays on screen.

What the addon does

Sensory Vignette places a stationary, adjustable shade over the outer edges of the game world. It adds no animation of its own. Players can set:
  • Shape: five openings: vertical oval (the default), horizontal oval, circle, rectangle and rounded rectangle
  • Opacity: anywhere from 0% (transparent) to 100% (fully opaque)
  • Size and position: the width, height and placement of the clear viewing area
  • Controls: an in-game settings panel, keybinding support and saved preferences

The shade sits behind standard WoW interface elements, including action bars, chat, quest objectives and the minimap, wherever the game's UI layering allows.

Who it's for

SAT-I designed Sensory Vignette with misokinesia and visual sensory sensitivities in mind. It may also help players affected by peripheral visual distraction, migraines, vestibular sensitivities or visual overstimulation. The foundation is clear that it is a display customization option, not a treatment, and it won't remove every trigger.

"When studios talk about sensory accessibility, they mean brightness sliders, camera shake and flashing-light warnings, and they stop there," said Shaylynn Hayes-Raymond, MA, LCT-C, founder of the International Misophonia Foundation. "For people with misokinesia, another player bouncing on the edge of the screen or a spell effect that never ends can be enough to make a game unplayable. Sensory Vignette doesn't fix that for everyone, but it gives players a control they didn't have before."

The addon is one piece of SAT-I's broader work on game accessibility. The initiative has also published an accessibility report to Blizzard Entertainment on bouncing quest markers, spell effects and other-player animations.

Sensory Vignette is free to download on CurseForge (https://www.curseforge.com/wow/addons/sensory-vignette). After installing it in the World of Warcraft Interface/AddOns folder, players enable the addon and type /svig in chat to open its settings. One toggle turns the vignette off for a full view again.
