Honorable Mentions Awarded to Gail Jarrow and Kirstie Myvett
ARLINGTON, Va. - eTradeWire -- Jennifer Robin Barr has been awarded the Grateful American Book Prize for her electrifying novel, "Thunder and Mercy" [Astra Books for Young Readers/Calkins Creek]. The award was presented at a ceremony held at the Folger Shakespeare Library.
Described as "fast-paced and full of twists," this suspenseful middle grade novel transports young readers between the 1770s and 1970s as twelve-year-old Theodora "Thunder" Underwood uncovers the truth behind a Revolutionary-era spy network.
Barr stated, "Winning the 2026 Grateful American Book Prize has been especially meaningful, and I'm so proud to highlight Philadelphia in the 1770s and 1970s through creative storytelling in "Thunder and Mercy". I am particularly thankful to Carolyn Yoder at Calkins Creek for highlighting stories of lesser-known figures and events in our history, and to the Grateful American Foundation for recognizing historical fiction as a relatable and accessible tool for connecting young readers with America's past."

Two books received 2026 Honorable Mentions:
"White House Secrets: Medical Lies and Cover-Ups" [Astra Books for Young Readers/Calkins Creek] by Gail Jarrow – shocking, yet true, stories of presidential medical cover-ups from the 19th to the 21st century – a fascinating and provocative new installment in Jarrow's acclaimed Medical Fiascoes book series.
"I'm thrilled that "White House Secrets" received this year's Grateful American Book Prize Honorable Mention. Throughout my career, my goal has been to write nonfiction books about American history that will expose young readers to important and interesting stories they haven't heard before. That's why I am honored when one of my books is recognized by the Grateful American Foundation, an organization that shares my dedication to celebrating our country's history. Thank you for this special award." — Gail Jarrow
"The Four Seasons of Florence Wallace" [Tommy Nelson] by Kirstie Myvett, an historical novel about a Black orphan girl grappling for a solid place in Civil War–era New York City.

"I am deeply appreciative to receive an honorable mention from the Grateful American Book Prize. "The Four Seasons of Florence Wallace" tells the story of a girl and an event during an important time in American history that many people aren't aware of. The Civil War Draft riots caused widespread damage to buildings, businesses, and homes—including the Colored Orphan Asylum, which was a safe haven for orphaned Black children. My purpose in writing this book was to give voice to the voiceless—the innocent children who had already been dealt a hard hand in life. Thank you for recognizing this story that shines a light on important people and events in our collective American history." — Kirstie Myvett
