Immigration enforcement was a concern for many Florida voters in the Nov. 3 midterms. Tampa attorney Ahmad Yakzan offers general guidance for residents reviewing their own status.

TAMPA, Fla. - eTradeWire -- TAMPA, Fla. — Immigration enforcement was on the minds of many Florida voters as they went to the polls in the Nov. 3 midterm elections, according to a VisaVerge report. The vote comes as Florida continues an approach in which state and local law enforcement agencies cooperate with federal immigration authorities.

In Miami-Dade County, foreign-born residents make up 55% of the population. Voters there raised immigration enforcement as an issue in a congressional race, the report said. A Cuban American retail manager told the outlet that some employees had been detained or had stopped coming to work out of fear.

Poll results cited in the report showed support for enforcement focused on crime. But 53% of respondents said removing long-term residents with no criminal record went too far.

The FBI told county supervisors of elections at their annual statewide conference that there would be no immigration enforcement at polling places, according to the report.

Florida's approach to enforcement also continues to affect workplaces across the state. Florida Trend reported last month that about 34,000 temporary protected status holders worked in Florida's construction industry as of 2024. The magazine also reported that contractors have described Haitian and Venezuelan workers losing protected status.

For Florida residents and families, these developments have raised questions about what changes in status, work authorization and enforcement practices mean for them personally.

"Policy changes and enforcement news can be stressful, but the most useful first step is usually a calm review of your own situation," said Ahmad Yakzan, immigration attorney and founder of American Dream Law Office PLLC. "Know your current status, check the expiration dates on any work permit or protected status documents, keep copies of important papers in a safe place and get your information from official government sources or a licensed attorney. Every case is different, so general news may not reflect how a change applies to you."

Yakzan also encouraged residents to keep track of any notices they receive from U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services or the immigration courts and to respond by the deadlines listed. He advised caution with anyone offering immigration legal help who is not a licensed attorney or an accredited representative.
