SUGARCREEK, Ohio - eTradeWire -- SUGARCREEK, Ohio – The Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum (AoSRM) is excited to announce the arrival of Chesapeake & Ohio Railway (C&O) 2-6-6-2 steam locomotive No. 1308 at its facility in Sugarcreek, Ohio. The locomotive was transferred from the Collis P. Huntington Railroad Historical Society (CPHRHS) in Huntington, West Virginia, and will be preserved at the museum in our 18-stall roundhouse.

The museum accepted the locomotive and began planning its transfer to Sugarcreek. Moving a locomotive of this size presented logistical challenges, but No. 1308's historic designation added another layer of complexity.

Number 1308 is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, which carries requirements intended to protect historically significant resources. The proposed move across state lines required coordination with the National Park Service (NPS) and the State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPOs) of Ohio and West Virginia to ensure the locomotive could retain its listing.

The museum faced a choice: move the locomotive without preserving its historic designation or work with the appropriate agencies to maintain its status on the register. Given No. 1308's historical significance and the importance of honoring the CPHRHS's decades of preservation efforts, AoSRM chose to pursue the latter.

After several months of collaboration, the museum received approval from the involved agencies to move No. 1308 to its new home in Sugarcreek while retaining its listing on the National Register of Historic Places.

Fewer than 30 articulated steam locomotives are believed to survive today, making No. 1308 a significant addition to the museum's collection. The locomotive is also notable as the next-to-last steam locomotive Baldwin Locomotive Works built for use in the United States.

With the arrival of No. 1308, the Age of Steam Roundhouse Museum's collection now includes 25 steam locomotives.
