AI Needs Guardrails Now: A New Movement Asks People Everywhere to Take the Pledge
eTradeWire News/10851581
The AI Guardrails Pledge sets out eight proposed protections for high-risk AI and five uses that should never be allowed.
FEDERAL WAY, Wash. - eTradeWire -- Most AI is helpful and low risk. Some of it decides who gets hired, who gets a home loan, what insurance costs and what care a patient receives. The AI Guardrails Pledge, now open at AIGuardrailsPledge.com, sets out common-sense guardrails for that kind of AI. Any adult, business or organization can take it for free.
For high-risk AI, the pledge's proposed safety standards call for eight protections:
- A human makes the final call. A named, trained person reviews and approves every decision and can override the AI.
- Bias testing. Systems are tested for unfair results before launch and at least once a year, with the results kept on file.
- Notice. People are told when AI is part of a decision about them.

- Explanation. People can get the main reasons for a decision in plain language.
- Appeal. People can challenge a decision and have a human review it, with an answer within a proposed 30 days.
- Data care. Only the data the decision needs is used, it's protected, and it's never sold without clear permission.
- Records. AI-assisted decisions and human reviews are logged.
- Accountability. A named person is responsible for each AI system.
Some uses should be off limits:
- Secretly scoring or ranking people, such as hidden social scores.
- Mass facial recognition or tracking in public without legal authority.
- Manipulating vulnerable people, including children, older adults and people in crisis.
- Letting AI decide to use lethal force without human control.
- Buying or selling people's personal data in bulk without their knowledge and consent.
The full draft standards are open for public comment at the AI Safety Standards page (https://aiguardrailspledge.com/proposed-ai-safety-protocols-and-standards/).

"I'm not anti-AI. I use it every day," said founder David Berg, a real estate broker who started his career in IT and computer science. "That's exactly why I know AI that makes decisions about people's lives needs real rules, and there must be AI safety and guardrails put in place now. If we reach people through clubs like Rotary, Kiwanis and Lions, we can work our way up to the world leaders who need to hear us."
The pledge was started by a member of the Rotary Club of Federal Way. Organizers are inviting service club members to take it. Everyone who pledges gets an "I took the AI Guardrails Pledge" shield to share online.
The AI Guardrails Pledge is an independent effort and is not affiliated with or endorsed by Rotary International, Kiwanis or Lions Clubs International.
