What is Windshield Molding and Does it Need to be Replaced? Some windshields only require a top molding, while others may have a top in addition to hard plastic side moldings.

SAYREVILLE, N.J. - eTradeWire -- A windshield molding is the black rubber trim that wraps around your windshield. The type, or size of molding differs based on the vehicle. Some windshields only require a top molding, while others may have a top in addition to hard plastic side moldings. Those with hard side moldings may be attached to the body of the car and most likely replacements can only be found through the car dealer. And then there may be some vehicles that don't require moldings at all.

The purpose of moldings is mainly to cover the gap between the edge of the glass and the body or frame of the car. Therefore, in most cases they are mostly for cosmetic reasons. However, moldings are useful to help drain water down the sides of the windshield.

When replacing your windshield, the auto glass company will find the correct windshield for your vehicle. In doing so, they will know whether or not an additional molding will need to be ordered. Whether or not to replace the molding depends on a few circumstances. Some windshield glass may have the molding already attached. If needed separately, you might see the cost reflected on your quote or bill. There could be times when an unattached molding can be reused, saving you the cost of a new one.

If the technician can remove it from the channel without distorting it, they will be able to reglue it to the replacement glass. Even the most experienced tech may have difficulty if there is wear and tear from weather causing the plastic to deteriorate. On some newer vehicles, they will automatically need the molding replaced. Check with you auto glass experts to find out your options.
