CHARLESTON, W.Va. - eTradeWire -- Citizens for West Virginia Election Integrity (C4WVEI), founded in late 2023, calls for immediate legislative action to safeguard the integrity of our elections. Comprised of dedicated volunteers from across West Virginia, the group aims to ensure that every vote is legally cast, accurately recorded, and transparently audited. To this end, we have been actively working with the Secretary of State (SOS), the Legislature, county election officials, and other WV citizen groups. Improving transparency and trust for WV citizens will significantly increase voter turnout and motivate more citizens to become actively engaged in the election process.

Statement from Delegate Rick Hillenbrand (Romney, WV), WV House of Delegates: "Voting is a privilege of every US citizen, yet every election cycle across the US illegal votes are cast whether by intention or by accident (1). I am proud to live in West Virginia where our Secretary of State Mac Warner is working to make West Virginia the "gold standard" when it comes to voting integrity. I am also very pleased to be one of a number of West Virginia Legislators who with the instrumental help of the Citizens for West Virginia Election Integrity group have formed a WV Legislative caucus group with the objectives of working with our state and local governments to ensure that every vote cast in West Virginia is: legally valid, accurately recorded, and transparently audited."

Critical Need for Reform

Our right to vote is the foundation of our democracy. C4WVEI stresses the necessity of trusting that our votes are cast by legally registered citizens with valid photo IDs, counted in compliance with state laws, and accurately reported. Currently, West Virginia ranks 31st (tied) in the nation for election integrity, according to the Heritage Foundation (2). This ranking highlights the pressing need for substantial improvements in procedure and legislation.

A majority of U.S. citizens currently distrust our election process, as supported by recent scientific surveys (3,4). Reports indicate that 20% of mail-in voters in the 2020 election admitted to engaging in voter fraud (5). According to a June 2024 survey, 66% of voters believe the outcome of the 2024 Presidential Election will be affected by cheating (6). Also, citizens have serious concerns about non-citizens influencing the vote and efforts to register illegal voters further emphasize the need for these reforms (7).

We invite all West Virginians to join our efforts to protect and strengthen the state's electoral system. Through collaboration with lawmakers, election officials, and community members, we are committed to restoring confidence in the democratic process. The group aims to ensure every vote is counted legally and transparently, fostering a system of accountability.
