LAKEVILLE, Minn. - eTradeWire -- Introducing "VetsTurn", a WoodTurning Program for US Combat Veterans

There is growing evidence to suggest that the craft of woodturning has healing power for those who suffer with PTSD.  The focus on a singular task, the peaceful shearing of wood into pleasant ribbons, and the repeatable endorphin-producing process of creating a beautiful object with one's hands, all serve to mitigate stress and help the craftsman regain a sense of balance and self-worth.  Last year ToolMetrix worked with a group of sponsors and friends, along with oversight from a non-profit called Project 147, to provide a complete woodturning package, including tools, education and support to three US Combat Veterans.  All three recipients; Joy from California, David from North Carolina, and Omar from Texas, became proficient woodturners and found relief from the program.

Inspired by the demand and the success of last year's program, this year we are offering the same opportunity to five additional US Combat Veterans.  Each veteran recipient will receive the following brand-new tools, supplies and support: a mid-sized lathe, a complete set of Easy Wood Tools carbide turning tools, a Nova chuck and pen accessories, spindle and bowl turning materials from multiple wood vendors, safety equipment, training DVDs from renown turners and educators George Vondriska and Ashley Harwood, and personalized training (in person or on-line, depending on preferences of the recipient).  Each recipient will also have a woodturning expert as a sponsor who will be available for coaching and support, and to ensure that he or she masters the skills.

"The free equipment and supplies are what gets the veterans' attention, but it's the personal coaching that really accelerates learning and makes this a positive experience for everyone involved." says Paul Mayer of ToolMetrix.  "We've found this program to be an exciting, growing platform to enable good-hearted people in the woodturning community to show gratitude to the service members who have been so generous with their commitments and sacrifices.  Simultaneously, it provides us a glimpse into a world that many of us haven't had much exposure to, giving us a deeper empathy for the situations that many of our military veterans have to deal with."
