For the first time in Coronado 15 Junior National history the championship podium will be shared by three up and coming sailors!

SEATTLE - eTradeWire -- Since 1968, a strong tradition has dominated the waters of the west coast – Coronado 15 racing! Sailors compete for a chance to participate in the annual National Championship. In the 1970's the club hosting the event decided that along side the National Championships there should be a Junior Championships as well, and so the Junior Championship race was born. In the Junior Championship race teams must have a skipper under 19 years of age.

On July 18, 2019 the 51st  Coronado 15 North American National Championships were hosted by the Beaux Arts Racing Fleet on beautiful Lake Washington just outside Seattle in Beaux Arts Village.  Despite rainy conditions, the associated Junior Championship had a bright spot. For the first time ever the Junior's Title will be held by three skippers!

The Championship spanned three races on beautiful Lake Washington. All three champions placed first, second, and third respectively in one of the three races. The first race was won by the father daughter team of nine-year old Eva Rumbaugh (Sacramento CA) and David Rumbaugh (Sacramento CA). The second race was dominated by local favorites, 11-year old John Avansino (Beaux Arts Village WA) and Chandler Sharp (Beaux Arts Village WA) who controlled the race wire to wire. The last race was tight but in the end ten-year old Henry Birkholz (Woodinville WA) and Steve Fishman (Sacramento CA) came away victorious.

Aaron Sharp officiating the event gave the young skippers the option to have a winner takes all sail off or to head back to the dock all as champions. The sailors unanimously agreed to call it a three-way tie, and for the first time in Coronado 15 Junior National history the championship podium will be shared by three up and coming sailors.
