The United States Army Medical Readiness Command presented Col. Jay Johannigman (Cincinnati trauma surgeon) with the Legion of Merit.
CINCINNATI - eTradeWire -- The United States Army Medical Readiness Command awarded Dr. Jay A. Johannigman with the Legion of Merit in recognition of his service in Afghanistan in 2021. The Legion of Merit, also known as LOM, is a military award that recognizes exceptional performance in one's duties. This decoration is given to uniformed military personnel of the United States as well as foreign military leaders and politicians.
Dr. Johannigman is a Colonel in U.S. Army Reserves Medical Corps. He was first active-duty military service in 1990 with the Air Force. He is currently stationed at the NATO headquarters in Kabul (Afghanistan) as a COMRS officer.
Dr. Johannigman was a part of the initial formulation of the United States Air Force's Critical Care Aeromedical Transport Team. This was during his active duty years at Wilford Hall Medical Center. He has been active in Critical Care Aeromedical Transport for the past thirty years. He played a key role in the creation of the United States Air Force Centers for Sustainment of Trauma and Readiness Skills (CSTARS), at the University of Cincinnati. Since 2001, Cincinnati CSTARS has been the advanced training center for all Air Force CCATT Teams.

He has served seven combat operations as a combat surgeon, including CCATT team members, and also served in many other military leadership capacities in Iraq, and Afghanistan, and currently serves as an advisor to the Uniformed Services Health Sciences University, Washington, DC. Dr. Johannigman graduated from the United States Air Force Aerospace Medicine primary course and has kept his rating as a flight surgeon ever since.
Dr. Johannigman has an active surgical practice that includes trauma, surgical critical, emergency general, and general surgery. He also maintains an elective general surgery practice. His research interests include controlled loop ventilation, critical care monitoring, and pulmonary failure. He is the principal investigator for seven active protocols. He also leads a strong research effort. He has contributed to the publication of more than one hundred peer-reviewed publications, 18 book chapters, and 100 abstracts.

The Legion of Merit, one of the two United States military decorations, can be issued as a neck order. The Medal of Honor is another award. This is the only United States decoration that can also be awarded a degree. The Legion of Merit is the sixth most popular U.S. military decoration.
