PROVIDENCE, R.I. - eTradeWire -- Remi IT Solutions, an IT services and managed cybersecurity services company, today announced the results of a review of 400 email domains for some of the largest organizations across Massachusetts and Rhode Island. Remi IT Solutions reviewed the domains of 400 organizations for basic email security policies and found most are ill prepared. Out of the 400 email domains reviewed, only 125 correctly implemented basic email phishing and spoofing protections.

DMARC, which stands for Domain-based Message Authentication, Reporting, and Conformance, is an email-validation system designed to protect email domains from being used in email spoofing, phishing scams, and other cybercrimes. Weak DMARC policies make it easier for cybercriminals to impersonate brands and accomplish costly data breaches and other crimes.

Out of 200 email domains reviewed from Massachusetts, 39 percent had a strong DMARC policy. Out of 200 email domains from Rhode Island, 23.5 percent had a strong DMARC policy. These statistics mirror the state of basic email security protections in the United States, as recent research suggests DMARC compliance is weak overall.

"Most large companies do not have the policies in place to prevent a simple email spoofing attack," said Remi IT Solutions President Zopito DiGiovanni. "A poorly configured DMARC policy is as effective as having no DMARC policy – meaning that it's not effective at all. Any organization sending email should have their DMARC policies set up correctly. We have the opportunity to collectively decrease the risk for email spoofing and phishing by ensuring we have strong DMARC policies at our organizations."
