SURREY, U.K. - eTradeWire -- A rarely discussed design choice between post-based and continuous structural channel balustrade systems can have a significant impact on roof membrane performance, according to BalcoDeck®.

Although both systems support glass balustrades, they transfer structural loads in very different ways. Post-based systems concentrate loads at individual fixing points, creating higher stress concentrations where the balustrade meets the roof. Continuous channel systems distribute loads along the full length of the channel, reducing stress at any single point.

Where penetrative fixings are used, these concentrated loads can increase the risk of membrane damage and long-term waterproofing failures.

BalcoDeck® also highlights that glass panel size directly affects the base moment - the turning force generated by the balustrade. Larger and taller glass panels create greater structural loads, particularly in channel systems, yet these calculations are often not fully reflected in fixing and membrane detailing.
