Starting the New Year Right: Break Free from Habits That Hold You Back

Entrepreneurial Wellness Expert, Jennifer Gray Shares Her Top Tips

PORTLAND, Ore. - eTradeWire -- As the calendar turns to a new year, many people feel the pull to create meaningful change. But, as many of us know, resolutions often fizzle out. Jennifer Gray, entrepreneurial wellness expert and licensed mental health therapist, believes the key to a fulfilling year lies in asking yourself three transformative questions that cut through the noise and bring clarity to your priorities. "New Year's resolutions often fail because they're based on external expectations rather than what truly fulfills us," Gray explains. "This year, challenge yourself to be ruthlessly honest about what's holding you back, and start making changes that align with your values."

Three Questions to Kick off 2025 right

1. What Habit Makes Me Miserable?

Take a close look at your daily routines and identify habits that are negatively impacting your well-being. Do you start your day rushing around and stressed out before work has even begun? Are you routinely over committing to projects or invitations? These habits may be subtle but are draining your energy so it's time to reassess.

Action Step:
Choose one small habit that no longer serves you and start by making a simple change. Replace a chaotic morning routine with a few minutes of stretching or practice saying no to commitments that don't energize you.

2. Do I Actually Want This, or Do I Just Think I Should?

It is easy to find ourselves trapped by other peoples expectations rather than living our own desires. Do you feel you should go back to school because of what others think even though the thought of it fills you with dread? Chasing someone else's version of success will only leave you feeling unfulfilled. Decide if your goals come from your heart or external expectations.
Action Step: Make two lists: one of all the things you think you "should" do and another of what you truly want. Identify who you're trying to please with each "should," and let go of one, replacing it instead with something from your "want" list.

3. Am I Protecting What Matters Most to Me?

Reflect on how you are spending your time and energy. Your calendar should emphasize your priorities. If meaningful moments like dinner with the family are being squeezed out, reevaluate the situation.
Action Step: Protect your time by setting firm boundaries. Block time off in your schedule for things that are important to you and limit engagements that don't align with your core values.

"This isn't about overhauling your life overnight," Gray says. "It's about taking small, intentional steps to align your actions with your values."
