An opportunity to lay the cremated remains of a loved one to rest.

PORTLAND, Ore. - eTradeWire -- River View Cemetery is holding its first annual Scatter Day in the cemetery's Stephens Creek Canyon Overlook on Saturday, April 24, 2021, in honor of Earth Day. Scatter Day is an opportunity for those searching for a final resting place for the cremated remains of a loved one. This free event allows families to place human cremated remains in a beautiful, permanent memorial without charge. The serene Stephens Creek Tributary area is a natural watershed that leads to the Willamette River. Cremated remains will rest along the canyon ridge, inside River View Cemetery, overlooking the Stephens Creek tributary. River View Cemetery was established in 1882 and is the oldest locally-owned, non-profit endowment care cemetery in Portland. The cemetery is 170 acres of natural beauty that hosts vistas of the Portland area and is home to an assortment of wildlife including bald eagles, deer, and coyotes.

Why Scatter Day
"This free annual event gives families the opportunity to come to River View Cemetery with their loved one's cremated remains and take that final step towards closure," said Rachel Essig, Executive Director of River View Cemetery. "Often times families think they will scatter their loved one's cremated remains, but later, for many reasons, they have not. Some are not ready to let go, or some are unsure if that decision is right for them because they're unaware of other options. The purpose of offering this free event every year is to help provide options for area families and offer a way to memorialize a passed family member in a peaceful and dignified manner." When making arrangements for scattering at River View Cemetery, the name and vital statistic information will be recorded as a permanent record, an assurance to future generations seeking the final resting place of a family member.

Scattering is an act of pouring the cremated remains from the urn or vessel onto the earth in a hole in the soil or over water. River View scatters cremated remains on top of the canyon ridge, combining it with leaves and branches while adding mulch. It is then mixed after each scattering to ensure dignified placement and forest health. Next of kin must make an appointment with the cemetery to fill out an Authorization and Acknowledgement Form prior to the placement of cremated remains. If you have cremated remains or have inherited an urn with remains of a loved one and are unsure what to do, contact River View Cemetery at 503-246-4251 or email info@riverviewcemetery.org to make arrangements for placing your loved one's remains.
