Project Chimps Welcomes Six New Male Chimpanzees Retired from Medical Research
MORGANTON, Ga. - eTradeWire -- Project Chimps is proud to announce the arrival of six male chimpanzees—Tory, Tommy, Tweetybird, Twirp, Duane, and Charlie—who have officially begun their retirement at the sanctuary. The group was transferred from the New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana, marking another meaningful step in Project Chimps' mission to provide lifelong sanctuary to chimpanzees formerly used in biomedical research.
The chimpanzees arrived safely after months of collaboration, planning, and behavioral assessments to ensure a smooth and stress-free transition. Upon arrival, they were greeted by a dedicated team of caregivers, veterinarians, and behavior specialists who will support them as they acclimate to their new forested home in the Blue Ridge Mountains.
"These boys have spent their entire lives in research settings," said Ali Crumpacker, Executive Director of Project Chimps. "Now, for the first time, they'll experience the freedom to explore natural spaces, form meaningful social bonds, and live with dignity and choice."

Over the coming weeks, Tory, Tommy, Tweetybird, Twirp, Duane, and Charlie will receive routine behavior evaluations and gradually be introduced to larger living areas and new social partners, allowing bonds to form at a pace that prioritizes their comfort and individuality. Their personalities and stories will be shared with supporters as staff get to know them individually.
With these arrivals, Project Chimps now provides sanctuary to 105 chimpanzees retired from medical research. Each new group increases the need for expanded habitats, specialized care teams, enrichment opportunities, and sustained community support. To help meet these needs, a matching gift opportunity is currently available for those who wish to contribute to the chimpanzees' lifelong care.
