Canada's Voice for Privacy and Access calls on government to articulate clear ownership rights for in-vehicle data.

CALGARY, Alberta - Oct. 18, 2018 - eTradeWire -- The Privacy and Access Council of Canada (PACC)  and its consortium partners Canadian Advanced Technology, Association of Canadian Car Rental Operators, and the Automotive Industries Association of Canada, presented a 13 page Submission to the Hon. Navdeep Bains, Minister of Innovation, Science and Economic Development, as part of the National Digital and Data Consultations, focusing on the privacy and access issues driven by the intelligent vehicle sector.

"The connected car industry has the potential to benefit Canada's drive for innovation in unprecedented ways," said PACC president, Sharon Polsky MAPP. "Privacy and access must be addressed now to ensure that Canadians can have genuine control over their personal information as it is collected and created by vehicles. That control is essential to earn Canadians' trust that is so necessary to steer innovation and the intelligent vehicle sector toward a secure growth trajectory."

The consortium submission pointed to an urgent need for the Canadian Government to articulate basic ground rules that:

·    Establish clear mechanisms to govern data collection, access, use and privacy to protect consumers;

·    Establish unambiguous automaker responsibilities around data collection, access, use and privacy; and

·    Establish a use case-based regulatory framework for in-vehicle data that would provide consumers with genuine choice and control over their data and privacy.

The consortium also outlined what that legal framework might entail.
