President Greiner Inducted into Weirton Hall of Fame

WHEELING, W.Va. - eTradeWire -- West Liberty University President Stephen G. Greiner is among those inducted into the 2019 class of the Weirton Hall of Fame this past Sunday. A former Weir High School athletic standout, Greiner was inducted in the category of sports and athletics.

"I am honored and humbled to be selected for my hometown's Hall of Fame. I have great memories of my time as a member of Weir High School athletic teams," Greiner said.

This year's Hall of Fame induction banquet was held at 2 p.m., Aug. 11 at Undo's in Weirton.

The son of John and Mitzi Greiner of Weirton, he is a 1964 Weir High School graduate, where he was a member of the school's football, basketball and track teams and played on the 1963 State Championship basketball team.

Greiner earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky, a graduate degree from Western Kentucky University and his doctoral degree from Virginia Tech. He has been involved with higher education for 46 years, and was named president of West Liberty University in 2016.

Previously, he served as the president and CEO of Hazard Community and Technical College, which serves approximately 4,000 students in seven counties in eastern Kentucky.

He also has been president of Brunswick Community College, president of Virginia Intermont College, vice president for academic affairs at the University of Evansville, and held various positions at Old Dominion University, the University of South Alabama and Radford University.

He has been an active member of Rotary and serves on the board of the Regional Economic Development Partnership in Wheeling, and the Wheeling Area Chamber of Commerce. He also is a member of Oglebay Institute.

Greiner has two brothers, John and Nick, and two sisters, Lisa and Carla. He is married to Nancy Miller-Greiner, and they have two adult children, twins John and Jacquelyn.

Other members of the Weirton Hall of Fame Class of 2019 are Richard "Rik" Rekowski, public service; WLU (https://westliberty.edu) Alumnus Dr. Eli Dragisich, public service; Brenda Casey, music and fine arts; Robert Lee Watson, music and fine arts; Herman F. Capito, business; and Alumnus Louis Kuntupis, sports and athletics.

Dragisich was a well-known optometrist and Kuntupis a successful high school athletic coach who actually served as President Greiner's first football coach.
