People & Stories/Gente y Cuentos Awarded over $20,000 in Grants including Princeton Area Community Foundation 2022 Community Impact Grant
eTradeWire News/10707037
Our organization's programs provide increased community engagement and opportunities for broader conversations around literature, civic duty, and social justice. - Cheyenne Wolf, Executive Director
LAWRENCEVILLE, N.J. - eTradeWire -- - "People & Stories/Gente y Cuentos receives many more requests for its programs than we are able to provide each year," Executive Director Cheyenne Wolf shared recently. "It is only through the generosity of funders and community support that we can hope to close this gap and continue to expand our programs providing higher self-esteem, improved literacy, greater critical thinking, and civic engagement for all."
People & Stories/Gente y Cuentos, celebrating 50 years of transforming lives through literature, was recently awarded over $20,000 in significant grants including $10,000 from the Princeton Area Community Foundation's Community Impact Grants, $5,000 from The Rita Allen Foundation, $5,000 from The Edward T. Cone Foundation, and $3,000 from The Thendara Foundation.
"We are extremely grateful to Princeton Area Community Foundation, The Rita Allen Foundation, The Edward T. Cone Foundation, and The Thendara Foundation for these important and meaningful grants which will allow us to expand our offerings and continue providing programs at several of our long-standing Mercer County partner sites," Wolf noted. Some of the sites include The Father Center, Children's Home Society (which is provided with both English and Spanish language programs) and Rescue Mission of Trenton.

ABOUT PEOPLE & STORIES/GENTE Y CUENTOS:
People & Stories/Gente y Cuentos (P&S/GyC) is dedicated to opening doors to literature for new audiences. Through oral readings and rigorous discussions of enduring short stories, we invite participants to find fresh understandings of themselves, of others, and of the world.
Our programs, offered in English and Spanish, use oral readings and structured dialogues of complex short stories to invite participants to connect their own varied life experiences to the universal themes found in great literature. Now in its 50th year, our program methodology effectively removes obstacles to the rewards of reading, especially for adults and young adults who identify as not having the skill, confidence, or motivation to read independently.
Our participants include men and women who are incarcerated or engaged in re-entry to society, residents in halfway houses and homeless shelters, recent immigrants, and low-income seniors in residential settings. By and large, the individuals we serve are reading at or below a 5th grade level, have not completed high-school, or are economically disadvantaged. A critical bridge, People & Stories / Gente y Cuentos provides hope and skills for moving forward.
