Paralyzed Athlete To Walk Marathon; Attempts to Shatter World Record And Help Others In Need

eTradeWire News/10539484
CHARLESTON, S.C. - eTradeWire -- Paralyzed athlete and I GOT LEGS Founder and Executive Director Adam Gorlitsky will use his ReWalk robotic exoskeleton at this January's 2020 Charleston Marathon in an attempt to become the first paralyzed athlete in the United States to walk a full-length, 26.2-mile marathon. Gorlitsky hopes to break the Guinness Book of World Record time of 36 hours and 46 minutes set by Simon Kindleysides of the United Kingdom at the 2018 London Marathon.

Gorlitsky, age 33, became paralyzed from the waist down with a spinal cord injury nearly fourteen years ago from a car accident.  In 2015, he was given the opportunity to use a ReWalk robotic exoskeleton — a groundbreaking device that would allow him to stand up and walk again.  After launching a successful fundraising campaign for his own ReWalk exoskeleton — that he has honorably named 'The Betty Carlton' —  he founded a nonprofit organization called I GOT LEGS with the mission of ReEnabling people with physical challenges. Gorlitsky states:

"When I am standing and walking in my exoskeleton, I do not feel disabled, nor do I feel able-bodied; I feel ReEnabled. My goal with I GOT LEGS is to create an organization that will help to ReEnable others living with physical challenges the same way I have experienced with the exoskeleton and other forms of life-changing technology."

The Charleston Marathon will be Gorlitsky's second attempt at the Guinness Book of World Record time for exoskeleton marathon walking.  His first attempt came at the 2019 Los Angeles Marathon this past March where he fell short of his goal by completing 17.2 total miles.  He states,

"As a paralyzed athlete, I know that every step I take is a win for the disabled community, and in particular those living with spinal cord injury, but falling short of my 26.2-mile marathon goal and Simon's Guinness Book world record is a defeat that I've thought about every day since the L.A Marathon.  I learned a lot that weekend, and I look forward to getting back out there — this time though with the love and support of my hometown behind me."
