STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. - eTradeWire -- A local childcare center announced today that they are organizing an event later this month to offer support to families affected by the coronavirus pandemic on the eve of the 2020-21 school year.

Bright Minds Academy will hold a "Giveback Event" for local families from noon to 5 p.m. on Sat., Aug. 29 at the school, located at 75 Skyline Drive in Staten Island's Park Hill neighborhood.

At the Giveback Event, the childcare center will distribute free book bags to children ages 5 -12 in advance of the upcoming school year. They will also offer and free children's haircuts on a first come, first served basis throughout the day.

The back-to-school event is free and open to the public.

"Our community giveback event is all part of this work as we support local families weathering the COVID-19 storm, both in terms of their health and their finances," said Lyn King, owner of Bright Minds Academy. "We're doing what we can to support our families during this difficult time as we look ahead to a brighter future."

King founded Bright Minds Academy to "create bright futures, one child at a time." She started her educational career in 2012, when she opened Lyn's LiL Kings & Queens family daycare in her home while studying child development at the College of Staten Island.

Over the years, her love of watching children grow a little every day has only expanded. She took a leap of faith in 2019 to open Bright Minds Academy with a vision to build not only a full-time day care and preschool but to also offer classes on parenting, coding, and GED preparation as well as counseling and teen empowerment groups geared toward low-income families.

"My goal is to bring new life into my community," she said. "These families deserve the same opportunities as children living in better neighborhoods. Bright Minds Academy will open doors for people in our neighborhood."
