New Proposal May Allow Debt Collectors to Communicate Through Social Media

eTradeWire News/10538846
Muller, Muller, Richmond, Harms, & Myers, P.C. discusses new proposed rule to the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act.

BIRMINGHAM, Mich. - eTradeWire -- A proposed new law could allow debt collectors to start contacting people through social media. The bill was proposed through the consumer Financial Protection Bureau and would authorize debt collectors to use social media as a form of communication.

The proposed rule would update the Fair Debt Collection Practices Act, last updated in 1977. It includes social media as a form of electronic communication for debt collectors. Opponents of the new law say it's stressful enough to get collection calls and don't want to log into social media and be faced with contacts from debt collectors.
