New Poll Reveals Americans Are Tipping Less—But There's a Catch

Consumers are eating out less, which might hurt service workers more than reduced tips
DETROIT - eTradeWire -- New Poll Reveals American Are Tipping Less - But There's a Catch
Detroit, MI - January 24, 2025 - A new poll from Briefs Media reveals a shift in tipping habits as economic pressures weigh on restaurant-goers. Out of 264 respondents, 33% reported tipping less, while 52% are tipping the same, and 15% are tipping more than before.
But there's a key trend behind these numbers: many diners reported eating out far less overall.
Consumers Cutting Back on Dining Out
Respondents share that while they may still tip generously, they are significantly reducing the number of times they dine out due to rising costs.
"I tip more when I eat out, which has been happening far less frequently." - DA
"I'm tipping more, but only because we're eating out on rare occasions due to cost." - LJ
"I tip the same, but hardly ever eat out." - GT

"I tip the same, but I go out less. I've reduce my eating out by more than 70%." - CS
Why It Matters
The findings suggest that restaurants may not just be facing lower tips - they could be dealing with fewer customers overall. With inflation, service fees, and increased menu prices straining consumer budgets, many are cutting back on restaurant visits altogether.
This shift could have major implications for the hospitality industry, with servers potentially making less not just due to lower tips, but fewer tables overall. Meanwhile, customers are feeling the pinch and adjusting their habits accordingly.
What's Next?
As tipping culture evolves and economic pressures persist, both diners and restaurant owners may need to rethink their approach. Will service charges become the new norm? Will restaurant-goers push back against tipping fatigue?
