The National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare (NCIHC) takes a detailed look at interpreter advocacy in healthcare to prevent harm.

WASHINGTON - eTradeWire -- The National Council on Interpreting in Healthcare (NCIHC) is pleased to announce the publication of "Interpreter Advocacy in Healthcare Encounters: A Closer Look." The goal of this paper is to provide a detailed examination of advocacy and its implementation in the healthcare interpreting profession.

The question of whether healthcare interpreters should advocate, and if so, when, and how they should do it, has long been discussed among interpreters, trainers, and other stakeholders.  This paper clarifies the place of advocacy within the holistic healthcare interpreter role, defines what advocacy is and is not, and describes in detail how to evaluate whether it is the best intervention to choose and how to best carry it out within the interpreted healthcare encounter professionally and collaboratively.

You can read the paper and view a chart of decision questions that help healthcare interpreters assess whether it may be appropriate to advocate or not in a given situation by clicking the two links below,
