GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - eTradeWire -- Yesterday, Judge Christina Mims declared a mistrial in the second-degree murder trial of former Grand Rapids Police Officer Christopher Schurr after jurors were unable to reach a unanimous verdict following four days of deliberations. On May 6, the court instructed the jury to continue deliberating under an Allen charge, but ultimately the twelve jurors remained deadlocked, prompting the judge to declare the mistrial on May 8, 2025.

On April 4, 2022 Officer Christopher Schurr found himself in a fight for his life, struggling over control of his taser with a suspect that fled a traffic stop. The suspect was clearly dangerous, attempting to steal the taser from him and obviously with the intent to use it on him. Officer Schurr did what he had to do in self-defense, and was charged with second degree murder for it. Chris is the latest victim of the war on police and was persecuted for doing his job and acting in self defense.

Now, due to the mistrial verdict, Officer Schurr and his family must continue to fight. Where the case goes from here lies in the hands of Kent County Prosecutor Chris Becker, who can decide to retry the case, offer Schurr a plea offer to secure a conviction or leave the case as is.
