MWA Prince George's County Hosts "From Shy to Sold" with Publishing Consultant Ally Machate

A focused workshop on navigating gatekeepers, strengthening submissions, and understanding the traditional publishing process.
ANNAPOLIS, Md. - eTradeWire -- The Prince George's County Chapter of the Maryland Writers' Association hosted its March professional development event, "From Shy to Sold," on March 10, 2026. The workshop featured Ally Machate, founder of The Writer's Ally (https://thewritersally.com), a publishing consultant and editorial leader with twenty-five years of experience supporting authors.
Machate provided a practical overview of the traditional publishing process, explaining how gatekeepers operate, what agents and editors expect, and how writers can strengthen their submissions. She discussed the roles of agents, editors, interns, and acquisitions teams, noting that mid‑size and large publishers require agented submissions and do not accept unsolicited work. She also described how manuscripts enter the "slush pile" and why a strong agent is essential for negotiating rights, advances, and long‑term author advocacy.

Participants learned how to research publishing contacts using tools such as publisher websites, staff directories, LinkedIn, MediaBistro, Publisher's Marketplace, the Literary Market Place, and ManuscriptWishList.com. Machate emphasized following submission guidelines precisely, avoiding attachments and links, and preparing a polished one‑page query letter with a compelling hook, brief synopsis, platform highlights, and a clear call to action.
The workshop also addressed networking strategies, including conferences, pitch events, online opportunities, and author‑to‑author connections. Machate encouraged writers to build visibility, understand their market, and stay informed through industry outlets such as Publisher's Weekly, Publisher's Lunch, Shelf Awareness, and BookLife. She also outlined when to consider self‑publishing, how to build an audience, and how agents and publishers monitor successful independent authors.
Attendees received guidance on preparing book proposals, including the sales handle, overview, marketing information, author bio, competitive analysis, chapter summaries, and sample chapters. Machate stressed that fiction and memoir manuscripts must be complete before querying, while prescriptive nonfiction may be sold on proposal.
