Mounarath Powell Dance presents "rem[EMBER]"
eTradeWire News/10794636
Join the company in its 16th anniversary season this spring for an electrifying and compelling evening of dance!
LA MESA, Calif. - eTradeWire -- Mounarath Powell Dance presents "rem[EMBER]" at the MP Dance Performance Space (8674 La Mesa Blvd, La Mesa, CA 91942) on March 6-8, 2025 @ 7:30pm.
Join the company in its 16th anniversary season this spring for an electrifying and compelling evening of dance. rem[EMBER] is curated by Caley Hernandez and will take you on a journey with repertory pieces, transport you to a place of lost and found love, and immerse you in a world of flame.
Hernandez's world premiere of Ember uses the stages of fire (ignition, growth, inferno, decay, and renewal) as a metaphor to symbolize the connection that we have with each other and our surrounding environment.
Artistic Director, Spencer John Powell will be presenting his award-winning piece Kaffir created in 1989. The term "kaffir" is a slang insult often directed at Black South Africans and is closely associated with South African racism. This work is inspired by the book, Kaffir Boy, by Mark Mathabane and has been brought out of the archives for the relevant issues we are currently facing, particularly the terrifying realities of racism. Powell will also add to the program his 2019 work, Graves, which gives insight into living a life with Graves' disease – an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks the thyroid gland, causing it to produce excessive thyroid hormones. Dancers slide and glide around the stage, sometimes out of control, and then back into control as is life with Graves'.

Kevin Jenkins, Founder and Director of Ballet Counterpointe, choreographed a new piece premiering on the MPD dancers that explores his quirky style in a fun and flirty duet paying homage to the 60's. His musicality is highlighted and the dancers bring his gestural movement to life in a way that feels both classic and contemporary. Robert Todd, Regional Director of Grey Matters Rhythmic Movement and Music Program, brings to the company a solo that delves into the intricate emotions of longing, vulnerability, and the tension between solitude and safety. This solo reflects the deep-seated need for connection and the fear of being left alone.
