Michigan Walk & Roll to School Day

Students celebrate Walk and Roll to School Day on Wednesday, October 9. There is still time for Michigan schools to register and participate in the worldwide event.
LANSING, Mich. - eTradeWire -- Michigan students will join children from around the globe to celebrate National Walk & Roll to School Day (WR2SD) on Wednesday, October 9. Started in 1997 by the Partnership for a Walkable America, WR2SD has grown to an international event that takes place in over 40 countries worldwide.
The event is being promoted by Safe Routes to School (SRTS) at Michigan Fitness Foundation (MFF), a federally legislated program administered by Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT).
SRTS programs are designed to make it safe, convenient, and fun for children and their families to walk, roll, and bike to school, as well as ease traffic jams, reduce air pollution, and unite neighborhoods.
"Walk and Roll to School Day is a great way for schools and communities to encourage healthy living," said MFF President and CEO Amy Ghannam. "Hosting a Walk & Roll to School event offers an opportunity for students and families to incorporate more physical activity into their daily routine through active transportation."

The event emphasizes the sense of joy and adventure students experience by being active on the school commute. It also raises awareness about important issues like increasing physical activity among children, pedestrian safety, reducing traffic congestion, and concern for the environment.
"Walk and Roll to School Day demonstrates to students, families, and local stakeholders what is possible in their communities," said MDOT Office of Economic Development Administrator Mike Kapp. "The event also promotes a broader message by creating awareness for fun, safe, active transportation environments that can kick start a Safe Routes to School initiative."
WR2SD events can be as straightforward or as grand as schools want to plan — from simply inviting students to walk to school, to hosting a pedestrian parade, or organizing a walking school bus.
"Our team enjoys working with schools and communities as they plan their Walk and Roll to School Day events," said Safe Routes to School Director Max Fulkerson. "The event gives schools the opportunity to remind everyone that active transportation helps students build confidence and is a fun way to travel to and from school."
