Live Healthy South Carolina recognized the nonprofit for demonstrating leadership in promoting community health

CAMDEN, S.C. - eTradeWire -- The LiveWell Kershaw Coalition, or LWK, was recently awarded a 2019 Community Innovation Award by Live Healthy South Carolina (LHSC).

The LHSC's Community Innovation Award goes to a community coalition or community-based organization that demonstrates active engagement in leading and guiding innovative work for community health improvement and the elimination of health disparities.

"It is an honor to be recognized at the state level for our health improvement efforts," said Kathryn Johnson, director of LWK. "We have taken special care to ensure that our local work not only improves the lives of residents but also improves the health of the state. This award validates the path we have taken to reach this point and motivates the coalition to keep pushing forward."

The LHSC Awards program recognizes individuals and organizations that exemplify the highest levels of commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of communities they serve. Those who receive this recognition serve as visible examples of how the LHSC blueprint can be effectively achieved in practice.

Following the completion of their Community Health Improvement Plan in 2019, LWK has actively advanced their three priorities through sub-groups that are implementing interventions with target groups throughout the county. The Healthy Eating, Active Living team is implementing: 5-2-1-0, Community Fitness Circuits, Faith Activity and Nutrition, FoodShare, and Wellness clubs in schools. The Access to Care team is working on updating a county-wide asset map, and addressing transportation barriers. The Emotional Health team is gearing up for a Mental Health First Aid training and a Youth Mental Health First Aid training.

LHSC is a statewide collaborative to improve the health of all South Carolinians by establishing the first ever state health improvement plan for the state. The initiative was designed to guide individuals and organizations across the state to work in concert to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to achieve a healthier life. This blueprint is built around five strategic priority areas, including resilient children, chronic health conditions, behavioral health, healthcare transformation, and factors that affect health.
