Justplug Launches Grid-Independent Solar + Energy Resilience Service for California Estate Wineries
eTradeWire News/10842066
Estate wineries in California face PSPS outage risks and escalating rates during harvest. Justplug's grid-independent solar strategy protects production and hospitality revenue while unlocking undeveloped acreage.
LOS ANGELES - eTradeWire -- Many California wine regions fall within the CPUC's High Fire Threat District. Southern California Edison has projected a 20 to 40% increase in the frequency and duration of PSPS outages as fire-risk areas expand, and these outages converge with harvest, summer on-peak rates, and the busy hospitality season.
"The root cause of this business resilience challenge is grid-dependency. If your operations don't rely on the grid, there's nothing to worry about," said Ling Wong, Justplug co-founder. "We're helping wineries address this grid-dependency problem with our grid-independent solar solutions."
The cost of a reactive outage response adds up: PSPS outages have averaged 41 hours. For an estate winery moving 50 to 100 tons through crush, that window overlaps with $90,000 to $180,000 in raw material value (based on 2023 Santa Barbara County wine grape pricing of $1,828 per ton). Tasting rooms and events typically drive over half of a winery's revenue, making hospitality continuity as critical as production resilience.

Generators remain the default workaround, but the economics are getting harder to justify. A 30 kW propane unit typically costs $28,000 to $75,000 to implement, $600 to $1,000/yr in maintenance, plus $370 to $1,030 in fuel per 41-hour outage. Yet, the investment/equipment sits idle most days.
"We provide our clients with an energy infrastructure that they own and control. It works 24/7/365, helping them slash their monthly power bills and protect their bottom line against rate hikes," said Bert Holtappels, Justplug co-founder. "Our solutions work regardless of the grid's status, so a shutoff notice becomes information instead of a scramble."
Beyond outage protection, Justplug's off-grid solar solutions address the acreage most estate properties leave undeveloped. They remove the cost barrier of extending utility lines to remote sections, opening those areas to opportunities such as glamping sites, private tastings, and outdoor event spaces.
Justplug's services support harvest and crush continuity planning, tasting room and event revenue protection, remote acreage development, conversion of existing grid-tied solar to grid-independent systems, and a resilient energy strategy roadmap.
