IBC 2024: MC-IF Member, Qualcomm, Unveils Revolutionary VVC Demo on Snapdragon X Elite
eTradeWire News/10781520
AMSTERDAM - eTradeWire -- IBC 2024 – Qualcomm, as a member of the Media Coding Industry Forum (MC-IF), returns to IBC to demonstrate the power of Versatile Video Coding (VVC) and showcase Ali266, a highly optimized VVC software decoder, developed in collaboration with Alibaba.
The demonstration will run on Qualcomm's latest Snapdragon X Elite platform and be on display at Hall 3, B.21 from Sept. 13-16, 2024, at the RAI in Amsterdam. Experts from Qualcomm and Alibaba will be on hand to exhibit the advanced capabilities of the Snapdragon X Elite in its delivery of 4K 120 frames per second, real-time VVC decoding using Ali266 and smooth video playback without stuttering or frame drops.
"Qualcomm's demonstration in collaboration with Alibaba highlights the versatility of VVC and the power of the highly optimized Ali266 decoder across the Snapdragon platform family. The technology is not only applicable to premium devices like the AI PCs powered by Snapdragon X Elite but also to other Snapdragon-powered devices, such as smartphones and tablets," said Aytac Biber, MC-IF Board Member and Director of Product Management, Qualcomm.
As the latest advanced video codec, VVC provides significant improvements over previous generations of coding technology, achieving up to on average 50 percent better video compression. This means videos can maintain the same level of quality while requiring only half the storage space. The reduction in video file size dramatically decreases "video stalls" by 50 percent and shortens video start times over 5 percent, leading to a vastly improved video experience.

"While VVC is at the opening stage of industry adoption, Qualcomm and Alibaba have partnered together to show that VVC can be effectively integrated into commercially available devices. We hope to light a path where streaming service providers leverage VVC – alongside optimized implementations such as Ali266 – to enhance user experiences, and consumers can enjoy higher quality video with smaller files improving storage efficiency" explained Biber. "The coordinated efforts of Qualcomm and Alibaba serve as a proof of concept and provide valuable guidance for the video industry interested in exploring VVC's compression efficiency in real-world applications."
