Global Learning Charter School Unveils Mural Honoring Mrs. Joan Jacobs
eTradeWire News/10826321
NEW BEDFORD, Mass. - eTradeWire -- Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) recently completed a mural honoring the memory of the school's beloved patron, Joan Jacobs. The school commissioned renowned muralist Sophy Tuttle to create the three-story mural on the south side exterior of the Joan and Irwin Jacobs Center for STEAM Education in honor of Mrs. Jacobs who passed away in May of 2024.
School officials have worked closely with the Roman Catholic Diocese of Fall River and with Design-Art-Technology Massachusetts (DATMA) to bring the project to fruition. Diocesan officials gave final approval for the mural to be installed on the building which is owned by the diocese. The staff at DATMA worked closely with GLCPS to identify the muralist, guide the design process and help with logistics.
Part of the design process included arranging for Ms. Tuttle to meet with GLCPS students who offered ideas for the mural, some of which are included in the completed project.

Each element of the mural tells the story of Mrs. Jacobs and the Jacobs family, including their passion for and contributions to art, education, technology and nature.
Mr. Furtado first proposed the mural project several months ago. He spoke to Dr. Jacobs about it last May during his annual visit to New Bedford, his birthplace
"The mural is a beautiful way to honor Mrs. Jacobs and her commitment to education and our future," said GLCPS Executive Director Stephen Furtado, Jr. "Both Mrs. And Dr. Jacobs contributed so very much to our community and this beautiful mural is a daily reminder of their important work. Our students and community members will be able to enjoy this mural for years to come."

About Global Learning Charter Public School
Open to New Bedford residents, Global Learning Charter Public School (GLCPS) is a tuition-free public charter school that currently serves 500 students in grades 5-12. Launched in 2002 as a Horace Mann charter school, GLCPS became a Commonwealth charter school in 2006. In order to generate a culture of personalization, the school setting and class sizes are deliberately small. Students, faculty and administration know each other well and teachers are able to tailor the curriculum to the needs and level of each student. GLCPS offers an exciting and challenging interdisciplinary curriculum that follows and builds upon the Massachusetts Curriculum Frameworks. Students learn to work collaboratively in teams, use technology meaningfully in their coursework, strengthen all elements of their communication skills, as well as develop the necessary skills to become engaged and ethical contributors to a global society. GLCPS capitalizes on the exceptional resources of the region (for example, marine sciences), and ties these resources to their curriculum and instruction. Additional information is available on the school's website at www.glcps.org or call 508-991-4105.
