Did a podcast for children just turn the Superheroes genre on its head?
YPSILANTI, Mich. - eTradeWire -- The word is out, La Llorona, El Cucuy, El Chupacabra and La Lechuza are not out to scare or nab children who misbehave, they are actually in the business of keeping them safe. The revelation was made by Perla Garcia and her trusty sidekick Valiente, the Spanish word for brave. Perla and Valiente are the stars of Caballo Media Productions' podcast The Perla Garcia Mysteries, a bilingual podcast for children between the ages of five to eight.
The podcast just concluded its first season which consisted of six episodes. The sleuthing exploits of Perla and Valiente are the creation of eclectic writer, director and producer Rodolfo Alvarado. The podcast is based on his book series of the same name.
Upon first listening to the podcast one gets the idea that each episode is a stand alone mystery similar to Scooby Doo. But in the sixth and final episode of Season One, Perla and Valiente turn to Perla's grandmother, a curandera, to assist them in solving a mystery. It is then that Perla and Valiente meet the Fearsome Four: La Llorona, El Cucuy, El Chupacabra and La Lechuza. The Fearsome Four have come to Perla and Valiente to ask for their help in saving el Barrio de Guadalupe, the neighborhood where Perla and Valiente live, from the evil powers that be.

When asked what inspired the idea of these iconic figures being superheroes, Alvarado said, "When I was a little boy my mother would say, 'If you don't behave El Cucuy or La Llorona is going to get you'. All the while I was thinking, but what if they're trying to protect me. Of course, I didn't say that to her face because I didn't want the belt or la chancla! "
"Yes, my mother was the inspiration, but it took Perla and Valiente to introduce the Fearless Four to the world. Perla and Valiente's calling was to solve mysteries that seem simple, but by the end of the first season, listeners discover that the mysteries are connected and that they are full of pistas, clues, that point to the Fearless Four as superheroes and the impending demise of el barrio."
Season One of The Perla Garcia Mysteries is now streaming. Season Two will be released in the fall of 2022. Alvarado is repped by Jonathan Schwartz of Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss and managed by Frank Fiore of Bridge Music Management. Caballo Media Productions is a nonprofit dedicated to producing positive content that aims to bridge cultural differences through all forms of media.
