"There are 1.9 million commercial diesel trucks in California and a shortage of qualified diesel technicians. It's wonderful to see students learn and be inspired in the new lab, and then have the opportunity for a lucrative career," says Ed Gibbs, Gibbs International Truck Centers president. "We're honored and thank the college and foundation for celebrating the opening of the Gibbs Diesel Mechanics Center on campus."
The center offers two certificate programs--Diesel Engine Repair and Medium and Heavy-Duty Vehicle Repair--and an Associate of Science Degree in Diesel Mechanics.
"The transportation, agriculture and construction industries all depend on diesel-powered equipment," says Blane Schloo, lead faculty at the center. "High-tech skills are just as important as hands-on training. Modern diesel engines and vehicle systems incorporate advanced electronics, emissions controls, and computerized diagnostics. Technicians need to be proficient with diagnostic software, electronic systems, and telematics to stay ahead in the industry."
