Kirkland women gain real-world skills and confidence in hands-on seminar
KIRKLAND, Wash. - eTradeWire -- Oom Yung Doe recently held a Women's Self-Defense Seminar at its Kirkland location, giving local women hands-on training in how to recognize, resist, and respond to real-world threats. The seminar focused on effective, easy-to-learn techniques that anyone can use in a high-pressure situation.
Led primarily by female instructors, the training also covered the mental side of self-defense, helping participants understand how to manage adrenaline, stay calm under pressure, and use posture and awareness as their first line of defense.
One participant, a long-time student, shared how she overcame years of trauma from a stalking incident through her training at Oom Yung Doe. The ability to reclaim her sense of control and confidence was life-changing, and her story resonated deeply with the group.
During the seminar, women trained in shock-and-escape strategies like palm strikes, vocal resistance, and breakaway techniques. They practiced hitting pads and heavy bags to get comfortable with impact, and learned how to handle different types of grabs and front-facing attacks. Many participants noted how much stronger and more capable they felt after just one session.

Ongoing programs include 6-week self-defense courses that go deeper into tactics like knee and elbow strikes, defending against chokes and bear hugs, and using body mechanics to escape and counter effectively. With each week, students build physical coordination, mental resilience, and the ability to protect themselves and others in real-world scenarios.
Statistics in Washington State remain sobering. Around 1 in 3 women will face physical violence in their lifetime. Oom Yung Doe is committed to shifting that number by empowering women with knowledge, community, and real-world self-defense skills.
