In a particularly contentious point, MGI's letter alleges that Costa personally funded votes for the People's Choice Award. Costa, when asked, didn't shy away from the claim. "I promoted myself the same way many candidates do—through digital ads and outreach. My friends and family invest in my goals. There was no rule against it, and there was no attempt to deceive."

Some industry insiders view the pageant's response as disproportionately harsh. With other contestants standing behind Emily and stating that they were all required to sign NDAs prior to competing.
