Cryolab Founder Marks 42 Consecutive ESHRE Annual Meetings Since 1985, Reflecting Over Four Decades of Continuous Engagement in Reproductive Medicine
WEST SUSSEX, U.K. - eTradeWire -- London, United Kingdom - Cryolab has announced that its founder, Paul Hague, will attend the ESHRE 2026 Annual Meeting in London, marking an extraordinary milestone of 42 consecutive years of attendance since the very first meeting of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) in 1985.
This continuous presence represents one of the longest uninterrupted participations in the history of the global reproductive medicine sector, spanning the entire modern development of in vitro fertilisation (IVF), embryology laboratory practice, and cryogenic preservation technologies.
ESHRE 2026 will take place at ExCeL London from 5–8 July 2026, bringing together thousands of clinicians, embryologists, researchers, and industry leaders from across the world.

The Origins of ESHRE and the Beginning of a 42-Year Journey
The European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology was formally established in 1985 during its inaugural meeting in Bonn, Germany. At the time, reproductive medicine was still in its formative stage. IVF had only recently transitioned from experimental research into early clinical application, and many of the laboratory standards that define the field today were still under development.
Among the attendees of that first meeting was Paul Hague, then working as Export Sales Manager at Planer, a role that placed him close to the emerging technologies supporting embryology laboratories.
That first conference would go on to become the foundation of a professional journey spanning more than four decades. Since that inaugural event, Paul Hague has attended every single ESHRE Annual Meeting without interruption, travelling to each host city across Europe and beyond as the society expanded into one of the largest and most influential gatherings in reproductive medicine globally.

A Front-Row Seat to the Evolution of IVF and Embryology
Over the past 42 years, the field of reproductive medicine has undergone a transformation that few other scientific disciplines can match.
In 1985, IVF was still a developing clinical technique. Laboratory workflows were inconsistent across institutions, and many of the tools now considered essential in embryology either did not exist or were in their earliest experimental forms.
Cryopreservation, for example, was still evolving, with early slow-freezing techniques dominating laboratory practice. Vitrification, now widely used for oocyte and embryo preservation, would only emerge years later as a more efficient and reliable method.
Similarly, laboratory standards for air quality, traceability, witnessing systems, and quality control were not yet fully established. Much of the early work in embryology relied on adapted equipment from other scientific disciplines, requiring laboratories to innovate continuously under practical constraints.
