Concert Violinist Addison Teng Redefines Music Education for a New Generation
eTradeWire News/10801987
CHICAGO - eTradeWire -- In a time when classical music education is under increasing scrutiny for its lack of adaptability, concert violinist Addison Teng (https://www.fultonmusicsociety.org/about/leader...) is setting a bold new standard. As the founder of the Fulton Music Society (https://www.fultonmusicsociety.org/), Teng has built a revolutionary model for music education—one that blends technical excellence with cultural fluency, emotional development, and career-readiness for the 21st century.
Through Fulton Music Society and its flagship Fulton Summer Music Academy (https://www.fultonmusicsociety.org/fsma), Teng is challenging outdated ideas about what it takes to become a successful musician. "I didn't commit to music until I was 16," he says. "That's considered late, but I believe with discipline and support, almost anything is possible."

The summer academy brings together a small, international group of students for an immersive four-week program that includes performances, lessons, chamber music, and practical workshops—ranging from instrument repair to business skills for musicians. Central to the experience is a focus on personal growth: daily journaling, peer reflection, and even public speaking are integrated into the musical training.
Those who show exceptional potential are invited to join Fulton In Residence, an international tour that takes students beyond the concert hall. "My motto is, give me four walls, a ceiling, and a floor—and I'll make it a concert hall," says Teng. From playing at orphanages in Korea to brewery lawns in Rhode Island, the program fosters global connection through music.
In response to the pandemic, Teng also launched a fully virtual version of the academy within 12 weeks, proving that music education can thrive under pressure. "When institutions shut down, we asked, 'What's the plan?' and no one had one. So we created our own."

Teng's holistic approach doesn't just train performers—it builds artists equipped to navigate complex careers. "We teach students how to manage gigs, understand contracts, market themselves—even how to file taxes," he explains. "Music is about discipline and precision, but it's also about life."
With the future of music education in flux, Addison Teng and the Fulton Music Society (https://www.fultonmusicsociety.org/) are offering a model that blends the best of tradition with the demands of a modern, global world.
