LOS ANGELES - eTradeWire -- In a historic first, leaders of the California independence movement, CalExit, attended the California Democratic Party Convention on May 30–31 to raise awareness and support for California's secession from the United States.

President Marcus Ruiz Evans and CEO Dr. Xavier Mitchell led the CalExit delegation, distributing campaign materials and meeting influential leaders, including Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, Congresswoman Maxine Waters, and gubernatorial candidate Betty Yee, along with dozens of delegates, union leaders, and elected officials.

On Saturday, CalExit co-hosted a mixer, where the movement honored Dr. Kathleen Harmon, a beloved San Diego-based activist and 40-year Democratic Party veteran. Known as "Queen Mother," Dr. Harmon was also formally announced as Chair of the CalExit Initiative Committee.

"Dr. Harmon's guidance and network were instrumental in our presence at the convention," said Dr. Mitchell. "Her integrity, wisdom, and community roots reflect the spirit of the CalExit movement. We're honored to have her."

For CalExit, participating in the convention marked a breakthrough moment in the movement's 10-year history. "We've never had this kind of access to California's political leadership," said Ruiz Evans, who founded the movement in 2014. "We engaged directly with gubernatorial candidates and state lawmakers—and what surprised me most was how open many Democrats were. Nearly 80% of people we spoke to were receptive after just a few minutes of conversation."

Ruiz Evans also delivered remarks at the mixer, sharing the stage with Democratic leaders and activists. "It was an incredible honor to speak in front of influential figures," he said. "To present the vision of CalExit in that room—and be heard—was truly powerful."

In January 2025, California Secretary of State Dr. Shirley Weber approved CalExit's request to begin collecting signatures for a 2028 statewide ballot initiative that would allow voters to decide whether California should begin the process of becoming an independent nation.
