Being an Enthusiastic Receiver is Key to a Fulfilling Life

Relationship Expert and Author Jane Wyker Shares The Value of Appreciation

GREENWICH, Conn. - Oct. 17, 2017 - eTradeWire -- "When I was a young girl, I learned to be a giver," says Jane Wyker, author of Soul Selfish: The Awakening of a "Good Girl". "By primarily prioritizing the needs of those around me, I was unconsciously trying to earn their approval and love. This pattern continued into my mid-thirties." But relationships don't work well when one person is giving most of the time while the other receives. Healthy relationships require a balanced cycle of giving and receiving.

Grateful Receiving Promotes More Giving

In her book, Wyker speaks of focusing on others' needs and desires to the detriment of her own.  Also, our culture especially conditions women to be givers, and for many it feels uncomfortable to receive. As a result, rather than encouraging receiving, many women inadvertently discourage others' gifts, fending off compliments or making statements like: "Your gift is beautiful but you didn't have to dothis for me." or "No thank you, I can do it myself."

Giving and receiving is a natural cycle, and when in balance creates happiness and connection. Wyker recommends a daily practice of noticing and appreciating even the smallest gifts others offer. Gifts can be tangible items, or services – things people do to make your life easier or put a smile on your face.. "Sharing genuine appreciation — a happy thank you, a smile or a hug will dramatically impact how people treat you, encouraging more giving" Wyker explains.  She adds that her husband Bob regularly says, "It's so much fun to give to you — I get to feel your joy!"
