A.M. Logging Enhances Wildfire Prevention Efforts with New DCNR Training

Local Logging Company Share the Importance of Proper Training
STATE COLLEGE, Pa. - eTradeWire -- A.M. Logging, LLC has taken a proactive step in wildfire prevention by participating in the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources' (DCNR) new training program, "Wildfire Prevention, Preparedness, and Response." This course, developed in response to updates in the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) standards, emphasizes the role of private entities in managing wildfire risks.
The DCNR, responsible for combating wildfires on public and private lands, recognizes the need to involve loggers in its wildfire prevention strategy. The training addresses both immediate dangers and broader responsibilities, including post-fire investigations and cost assessments.
On July 19, A.M. Logging's team attended the inaugural session at their Millheim facility. The four-hour course, led by Ben Livelsberger and Shawn Dorin from the DCNR, covered fire terminology, weather impacts, firefighting tactics, communication, and responder interaction.

Jeff Glunt, HR and Safety Director at A.M. Logging, stressed the importance of this training for the company. "We felt our entire team needed to attend this training. Hearing these crucial points directly from the DCNR team can really help drive them home," Glunt stated.
The training also explored critical questions for logging teams during wildfires, such as emergency coordination, site communication, and first responder access. It highlighted preventative machinery measures, including regular cleaning, inspections, repairs, and fire extinguisher maintenance.
A.M. Logging's fire extinguisher vendor also conducted a hands-on demonstration to ensure every team member was proficient in using this safety tool. Andrew Miller, Operations Manager, emphasized, "An extinguisher is a tool. It needs to be in working condition, at a known location, and used correctly."
The day ended with an event analysis led by Managing Partner Mark Byler, reviewing past incidents and discussing how the training could enhance response strategies. "Having the training is a good thing," Byler noted, "but knowing how to apply it is what really matters. Getting our team home safely every day is always our number one goal."
