70 Seconds To Impact : Why Drone Detection Isn't Defence

New LCC Asia Pacific® research finds counter-drone capital moving to the companies that can actually stop the drone
SYDNEY - eTradeWire -- Drone detection is a multi-billion-dollar market, but much of what is sold as protection falls short of the mark, according to new research from LCC Asia Pacific®.
Drone Detection, Tracking and Response examines more than twenty companies, the lessons of Ukraine, the 2026 Iran war and Europe's airport shutdowns, and procurement decisions across four governments. Its conclusion: detection only becomes protection when it is tied to a lawful response that can act in time — and for today's fastest jet powered drones, that time can be measured in only seconds.
"A perimeter sensor against a modern attack drone doesn't give you protection. It unfortunately gives you a very accurate record of what just hit you," said Nicholas Assef of LCC Asia Pacific®.

Buyers, legislators and investors appear to be reaching the same view. The UK's 2026 sensitive-sites competition excludes detection-only products. Under US rules, an officer certified to detect a drone cannot lawfully touch it. And of eleven US and European start-ups profiled, only one is a detection business; the rest build interceptors, missiles, gun stations and microwave weapons.
"Consolidation will be driven by the response layer," Mr Assef said. "Sensor businesses will be acquired by, or partner with, the companies that own the effectors and the software that connects them to a lawful decision."
Founded in 2004, LCC Asia Pacific® is a specialist investment banking and strategic advisory firm working across engineering, aerospace, space and defence disciplines - assisting clients with mergers & acquisitions, capital raisings, independent valuations and growth initiatives.
